“The Album” by the Jonas Brothers, 5.5/10

American pop-rock band, the Jonas Brothers, released their sixth studio album titled “The Album” on May 12. Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas, with the collaboration of Jon Bellion, balanced chaotic, funky tunes with serious ballads to create a sunny and carefree collection of pop. However, the album lacks critical texture and almost feels half-baked.

“The Album” consists of 12 tracks inspired by 70s superstars including the Bee Gees and Stevie Wonder. The album can be seen as a sweet love letter to the brother’s wives as the tracks share a common theme of blossoming love. Songs such as “Sail Away” and “Wings” use glossy vocals and chill synth instrumentals to depict the universal experience of being love-struck.

In contrast to their upbeat songs, slower, more expressive tracks are scattered throughout the album. For example, the song “Little Bird” is an ode to fatherhood while still maintaining the message of love. Lines like “small hands wrapped around my finger” touch the hearts of listeners with such sweet and precious sentiments.

Despite such endearing messages, the summer love album is intended to be an easygoing, fun, vacation album. However, many of the tracks feel repeated and lack uniqueness, while others feel out of place and unnatural when considering the vibe of the whole album.

The songs “Montana Sky”, “Miracle”, and “Vacation Eyes” virtually sound exactly the same—all of them depicting the feelings of summer love. The tracks feel predictable leading to a considerable lack of summer charm.

Other songs like “Little Bird” and “Walls” could be good listens by themselves, but are much slower and don’t fit with the perky, relaxed feel of the album. And while the album is definitely in need of texture, randomly incorporating two off-theme tracks at the end of the album fell short of properly executing variety within the music.

With little range in meaning behind the songs in “The Album”, the Jonas Brothers produced a lackluster collection of tracks that left listeners wanting more. Despite its shortcomings, the Jonas Brothers managed to achieve the most summer-inspired album of the year. So as the last weeks of school are right around the corner, consider checking out the album if you are interested in an average summer track.
