Fashion Club’s stylish seniors

Maybe you’ve seen them strolling in the halls or lounging on the senior steps during lunch; the seniors of Jackson-Reed’s fashion club always look fresh.

Founded in 2019, the club offers a place for students to talk about trends, fashion, and their favorite online and at-school influences.

Senior Kenefere Kamani explained that she joined “because [she] likes clothes, putting together outfits, and talking about fashion.”

Fellow senior Myles Bell echoed a similar sentiment, saying “it’s fun to dress, it’s fun to put clothes on,” adding that another draw is “high involvement and retention of Black people in the group, which can’t be said about many other extracurriculars in the building.”

The club hosts a wide variety of events, including bi-weekly fashion shows in the atrium and pop-up shops.

When asked about fashion trends and influences, the group generally agreed on one thing: club members were some of their biggest influences.

“I’m not really creative but when you have all those creative people around you it makes you want to do new things,” expressed Kamani.

Bell explained that they get inspiration “from Black queerness…If you see me in the hallway and think ‘oh, that outfit’s eating,’ trust and believe the idea was pulled from a fem queen in Brooklyn or Houston. Anytime you see my outfit, give credit to the people I pull from, which is Black queers.”

Other influences include June Ambrose, India Love, member Sanai Anderson’s Pinterest, and club supervisor Ms. Lane.

Many seniors of the club highlighted fashion as a method of expression and creativity.

“Clothes and shoes and your hair and your nails is a way of diversifying yourself and how you make your mark and show your personality,” explained senior Charity Jones.

“There are no rules to fashion,” added senior Lesley Torres. “People will try to dictate what you wear, but if you’re confident in it, you’re gonna look good either way. It all comes down to confidence.”
