Album Review: Emails I Can’t Send by Sabrina Carpenter

Singer, songwriter, actress and fashion icon Sabrina Carpenter (also known as Maya from the Disney TV show Girl Meets World), started her singing career back in 2014 with her debut music single “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying.” Since then, she has released four albums which didn’t get much attention.

But with her latest album ”Emails I Can’t Send”, the underrated Carpenter jumped into a whole new level of the music industry. Her angelic vocals will delight your ears and her intimate lyrics will hit many of the broken hearts.

Some of the songs were actual emails she would write as a type of coping during the pandemic while dealing with her emotions. She transformed the way she was feeling into words, making the album relatable for all the people struggling with love.

The record starts off with a heavy, powerful song ”Emails I Can’t Send”, that references the problem of falling in love and having trust issues. Many of these came from her disappointing father figure, which she alluded to in her lyrics, ”And thanks to you, I, I can’t love right, I get nice guys and villainize them”.

Continuing with the 5th song in the album, ”because i liked a boy”, Sabrina has to deal with the unpleasant consequences of fans making her the villain of the well known drama love triangle between her, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. Sabrina finds herself on the defensive in this song, talking about the death threats she got and the names she had been called. The song rose to fame on the social media app “Tik Tok” and provided a perfect preface for her “upcoming” album.

“Emails I Can’t Send” offers the listener melancholy, but also more hyper, rhythmic songs including ”bet u wanna”, which has a light country vibe. Furthermore, the songs ”nonsense” and ”bad for business” are catchy and fun.

In the album, Carpenter perfectly portrayed almost every stage of being heartbroken: disappointment, dealing with feeling worthless, anxiety, acceptance…I think this album can be her golden ticket to become a part of A list young musicians. •
