Bandit Taco steals Tenley taco scene

As students, we’re always on the lookout for cheap places with great food. When we heard about a new taco restaurant opening on 41st Street, just a few minutes walk from Wilson, we were eager to give it a try.

Although Bandit Taco is a recent addition to Tenleytown’s broad assortment of restaurants, it is not completely new to DC. Bandit has a location on New Hampshire Avenue that opened in 2017. They expanded their horizons to take on Tenleytown on January 7.

So why choose Bandit Taco over the other competitors in Tenleytown? Bandit Taco, despite having a relatively small menu, includes a wide variety of choices for all palates. One can choose from tacos, bowls, burritos, and quesadillas, stuffed with unique meat and seafood fillings including Korean beef, al pastor, and crispy shrimp, as well as vegetarian options such as wild mushrooms or tofu.

The choices and food itself that all appear fresh are more authentic and feel less mass-produced than those of competitors such as Chipotle and District Taco. When we went, we were met with friendly service while we snacked on a flavorful appetizer of chips and guacamole. Soon after we received our main courses of adobo chicken tacos and a skirt steak bowl that exceeded our expectations. These dishes complemented each other quite well. We have yet to try the other enticing options, such as yuca, sweet plantains, and sweet corn, all parts of Mexican cuisine. Additionally, the horchata and desserts offer a delicious treat previously unfamiliar to any menu in Tenleytown.

Another incentive to visit is the student discounts offered, including a 15 percent discount and additional discounts on certain foods, like $2 tacos, offered on Tenley Tuesdays.

The downside to Bandit Taco is the limited seating available, especially in the winter when the outdoor patio isn’t suitable for the DC chill.

Bandit Taco is perfect for any taco lover, or anyone up for an inexpensive and delicious treat. The combination of the addictive flavors and the friendly atmosphere earns our new Tenley favorite a 9.5 out of 10 stars!
