Bach Chat: the best club at JR?

Jackson-Reed is home to many clubs, including the Pop Culture club, unofficially given the name Bach Chat. . Bach Chat is exactly what it sounds like: chatting about The Bachelor. While I don’t quite know how to explain the premise of a bachelor who has a variety of potential romantic partners to choose from and eventually propose to while sending home the other candidates each week (known as the elimination process), I can illustrate how this highly absorbing club is conducted.

The show is in the depths of its 27 season with an episode broadcasted every Thursday, meaning enthusiastic JR Bachelor watchers have some time before they meet on Mondays to gather around a table to discuss the show. As an outsider, it felt like talking to a friend who goes to a different school and is filling you in on gossip about people you have never heard of. While some might laugh off the silliness of the club, it deserves a spot on the Common App Activity list. All six members not only know all about the contestants on the current season, but are able to recall all the previous ones and their romance drama, keep tabs on previous contestants on social media, and watch all of the spin-off versions of The Bachelor. The conversations are always engaging and members have hilarious insight about the contestants. Plus, the concept is so ludicrous it’s hard not to indulge in watching the show, and the conversations you can have about it are endless.

The club is hosted by English teacher Jenna Postler. While Postler was, “teaching grammar in one of [her] English classes, one of [her] students noticed all the character names” were from the Bachelor and the two started informally discussing. Fortunately, both were able to meet on teams during COVID, during which more students gradually joined. While the student has since graduated, each year there are new students that like to discuss the show. If you’re into The Bachelor, or want more face-time with Ms. Postler outside of AP Lang, definitely pull up in room 307 on Mondays to chat!
