Guthrie Wright works to keep commutes to school safe

Meet Guthrie Wright, or as most people call him, Sunny, the Safe Passage worker between Alice Deal Middle School and Jackson-Reed High School. Anyone who walks through the cow path knows that he’s one of the kindest workers there, but few have had a real chat with him. So, we did!

Wright started working here in January 2023. He enjoys his jobs very much. His goal is to keep his area clean while keeping people safe. His daily interactions can fluctuate between positive ones, like a quick “thanks for doing so much for us,” to the occasional negative one, such as telling students to stop skipping and go back to school. Wright encounters many kids who skip school, and he tries to interact with them to find out why they are doing so. In his single year of being here, he has cleared the park of kids trying to escape school to smoke, hang out with friends, or just avoid school altogether. To balance these not-so-positive interactions, he also encounters many students who recognize him and say hi, which he enjoys.

Between the year he’s spent working in Fort Reno, Wright has come to know the names of all of the dogs in the park, who he sees come through every morning with their owners. From dogs to smokers, Sunny handles it all with kindness and nobility, leading to him being known as one of the coolest people on either side of the cow path.
