Athlete of the month: Summer Campbell

Summer Campbell, senior and captain of the girls volleyball team, has been a key component of the team’s success this fall.

So far this season, Campbell is leading the team in both kills and blocks, helping Wilson dominate the DCIAA and maintain a #2 ranking in DCSAA behind Georgetown Day School.

Coming from an athletic family, Campbell was first introduced to volleyball by her older cousin. She played for Hardy Middle School from 6th to 8th grade, but credits her first club team, who she played for in 8th grade, with truly teaching her the game.

“I love everything about the game, how every point is its own triumph, the energy and excitement when someone gets a kill or a block. It’s just the best thing ever,” Campbell said. Only four players who played on the varsity team that finished 2nd in DCSAA in 2019 are returners on this year’s team.

Going into the season, Campbell was nervous about what the team would look like, as they lost four starters and a lot of upperclassman leadership. Despite a crop of new players, the team is doing very well, with an overall record of 17-1 and a record of 12-0 in DCIAA. Campbell credits the team’s success to their great chemistry. “Everyone just gets along really well and we really like playing with each other,” she said. •
