Wilson’s indoor track teams capped off the winter season at the DCSAA state championship meet. After a second-place finish for the girls and a championship win for the boys at the DCIAA meet, the girls team finished ninth place in states, and the boys team pulled off an impressive second-place finish.

The boys team saw Wilson dominate in events such as the shot put, the 4 by 200-meter relay, and the triple jump. Wilson senior Emperor Campbell won the shot put with a throw of 49 feet eight inches and senior Curtis Jefferson placed third. The Wilson 4 by 200-meter relay team took home the gold as well with a time of 1:32.66. In the triple jump, two Wilson athletes reached the podium and one just missed. Senior Joshua Belinga placed second, Masiah Thorne placed third, and Raymond Stevens placed fourth in the event.

Belinga noticed how the team supported each other through special relationships both on and off the track. He described how the team connected at the Virginia Showcase: “We had team bonding and learned a lot about ourselves as a team.” On an individual level, senior Stevens had a notable performance at the meet, placing second in both the 300 and 500-meter dash.

Junior Seth Smith attributes the team’s success to their commitment to one another. “We are very caring, we look out for each other,” Smith said. “We push each other at practice and at meets.”

After their second-place finish in the DCIAA championship, the girls team moved on to DCSAA where they didn’t quite get the result they wanted, placing in ninth. However, the team had many young athletes who scored Wilson points at the meet, including sophomore Caroline Rey and freshman Sage Hudson. Additionally, three members of the girls team made the final—juniors Phoenix Taylor and Tayler Camp and freshman Kymia Bridgett.

In DCSAA, the girls team was more successful on an individual level. Senior Ava Nicely placed fourth in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs with times of 5:24.44 and 11:39.97 respectively. Sophomore Caroline Rey placed ninth in the 300-meter dash and 55-meter dash.

Rey described what helped her and the other girls work hard this season, “As a team, I think what we really do well is be able to have fun while working really hard, and being able to lock in to achieve a big goal.”

Both the boys and girls teams are looking forward to their next challenge, outdoor track. “Outdoor season we gonna do big things,” Belinga said. Rey agreed for the girls: “We have bigger and better things coming for outdoor season.”
