Prom to be held at Culture House in June

After a two year hiatus, prom is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 11 from 7-11 p.m. at the Culture House.

Known for its vibrant artistic designs and interesting architecture, the Culture House’s exterior was painted by muralist HENSE and the venue regularly hosts live performances and artist workshops.

Seniors had the opportunity to vote on this year’s prom theme through an online survey, and the theme of Met Gala Red Carpet was chosen. The Hospitality Committee has been put in charge of working out all the details for prom, including what COVID-19 precautions will be in place. The Hospitality Committee puts on prom every year and is responsible for the decorations, food, and planning. One detail they have planned is to have a red carpet leading up to the entrance.

With DCPS dropping the mask mandate, COVID-19 guideline questions surround prom. “We don’t know, but we probably don’t have any COVID-19 guidelines if we continue on this path,” said Alex Wilson, the Director of the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism.

The state of prom is subject to change. “If there is a new strain, then we may not have a prom. We just don’t know,” Wilson continued. People from outside of Jackson-Reed will also be allowed to attend, a change in philosophy from homecoming.

Since last year’s prom was canceled due to COVID-19, this year’s event holds extra value. With many events having been canceled due to COVID-19, Wilson expressed his joy about the return of activities, highlighting the blood drive that recently took place.

“I think [prom] might be the peak moment of the year. We haven’t done a lot of the traditional high school stuff [this year],” Wilson said.

For many students, however, expectations are low. Senior Ella Cheney said she didn’t have high hopes for prom and noted the high cost of the dance. Prom tickets this year boast a price tag of $90, with the senior dues totaling $325. That total includes a yearbook, one prom ticket, cap and gown, and senior dues. •
