TW: mentions of a sexual assault 

”Blonde” was supposed to be a movie about a world famous Hollywood star from the 50s Marilyn Monroe, that everyone was looking forward to. Unfortunately, we got nothing more than a disgusting misogynistic sex fantasy that should have never appeared on screens. 

The movie is an adaptation of the fictional novel by Joyce Carol Oates from 2001 inspired by Monroe’s life. However the movie is made to seem like a biography which causes a big misunderstanding of the reality. 

Writer and producer (unsurprisingly a man) Andrew Dominik did not waste a single drop of his imagination. From sexual assault scene based on nothing more than rumors to a talking fetus, the biggest issue was the insulting representation of Marilyn, born Norma Jeane. He turned her into a foolish, weak lunatic woman surrounded by powerful men giving her all the fame. 

In reality, she had a lot of good qualities, but Dominik decided to point out just one of them: her body. There is no doubt that she was a bombshell, struggling with mental illnesses, drugs, daddy issues and childhood trauma. 

However, she wasn’t just a heap of blonde misery. Marilyn Monroe was strong at heart, bravely overcoming every obstacle with a big smile. Charming beauty was not the one and only reason she got to the top of Hollywood Hill. It was her hardworking and genial character too. Sadly Dominik didn’t show this side of hers to the world. 

The whole movie was such a waste of potential. Variety of colorful and black&white scenes made it perfectly authentic. Ana de Armas did phenomenal work playing Marilyn. The way she was moving, speaking, her facial expressions…For two and half hours she made Marilyn alive again. Her performance definitely deserves a credit even though she performed in a totally catastrophic project. The more disappointing part than Dominik’s perverted scenario is is the fact that in 2022 movie like Blond got a green pass into distribution. •
