Best spots in DC

Though I think we can all appreciate the many things Tenleytown has to offer, we have to come to terms with the fact that Fort Reno and Target have nothing more to give us. It’s time Jackson-Reed students broaden their horizons and explore the many other parts of DC. We have free public transportation and we need to take advantage of it.

So, if you’re looking to sit down and relax with friends while breathing in some fresh air you could always stop by the swings located near Blue Bottle Coffee in Georgetown. While securing a swing can be a challenge, it’ll be worth it for the pleasant view that overlooks the canal.

Another more obscure option, if you’re looking to sit down and relax with friends, would be the Botanical Gardens. The gardens are lively, full of color, and there are tons of exhibits to explore that showcase plants from all different types of biomes. Plus, students are granted free admission.

For all my book lovers, I highly recommend stopping by Lost City books in Adams Morgan. Lost City Books is a quaint bookstore with a large collection of books ranging one of a kind vintage to the newest best-sellers, making it the perfect spot to sit down with a friend or two and do some light reading. As a bonus, if you purchase a book and keep the receipt you can go next door to Andy’s Pizza and exchange it for a slice of pizza.

And while it might be a basic suggestion, you can never go wrong with the Georgetown AMC. Kick back and relax on their cushy reclining chairs while enjoying a large bucket of popcorn and watching their selection of peak cinema such as Puss & boots: the last wish or Cocaine Bear. Whether you’re there on a date or with friends you’re bound to have a good time, if you choose the right movie of course.

And finally, if you’re really adamant on staying in Tenleytown and in need of a snack I’d suggest Bandit Taco, a Mexican restaurant next to Tenleytown Barbershop. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating and a menu with a wide range of entrees including tacos, tortas, burritos and fajita platters big enough to share with at least three friends. When you walk in you are met with a large freezer stocked with Mexican coke, various Jarrito flavors, topo chico and water. Along with the entrees and drinks, the restaurant serves sides like yuca, elote (also known as “street corn”) and the classic: chips & guacamole. The food can be pricey, but if you stop by on Tuesdays you can get half off on their more popular tacos like Al pastor and carnitas thanks to their Taco Tuesday special.

Though these spots are some of my favorites, these are only a few of the cool places DC has to offer. I encourage all Jackson-Reed students to explore the city and find more.
